This is Corky, a puppy mill survivor that was used for breeding in a puppy mill in the U.S. (There are many here in Canada too!) so don't think this is just in the U.S. (We save many here too). This photo was taken right after her arrival on June 2, 2011. When I was asked if I could take on a Yorkie x (right from a puppy mill) that was possibly pregnant, I didn't hesitate to say YES. My heart was breaking for this poor girl who's only purpose in life was to produce as many healthy puppies as she can in her short life starting from a young age, only to be 'discarged' at any moment if she failed to live up to live up to their 'producing' standards!! The goal of making as much $$$$$$$ off of the back of this poor little soul as possible. A 'throw away!' for lack of a better word. Perhaps they didn't realize she was pregnant (which I highly doubt), because I can't believe they would give up a pregnant dog if they could make lots of money off of the dog. I don't even want to think of what her fate would have been had it not been for LOYAL Rescue Inc. stepping up and saving her, and the lives of her unborn pups too. Corky is a Yorkie x. As you can see, she has one ear, the other ear appears to have been 'chewed' off? not sure what happened, but whatever horrific abuse she endured during her time in the 'mill' must have been hell for this sweet little girl. Corky is the most affectionate and appreciative dog who gives us kisses everyday. She is the most trusting little soul, despite the horrific abuse and neglect she suffered at the hands of humans. It's no wonder she isn't more damaged emotionally and psychologically. Corky came to us a mess and stunk really bad. She was so much happier after a bath and groom and seemed to really enjoy that, and the attention I was giving her. Don't think this doesn't happen ALL the time because it DOES! We see this everyday in rescue and hear all the horrific stories of what goes on in puppy mills. Corky is one of the LUCKY ones to escape the puppy mill, but not so many are. There are many, many more Corky's out there...too many to count that are still in these 'mill's producing lots of puppies. A lot of these mills have 'brokers' who pose as so called 'breeders' and and will 'sell' the pups to the unknowing public at large and then give a cut to the 'brokers'; just another way that mills are finding ways to make $$. Please be aware of some breeders and ask a lot of questions. Also, be very CAREFUL when looking for 'breeders' online at places like Kijiji or Craigslist, these are just other places where these puppy mills lurk and are using the internet to sell puppies for profit to the public at large (who aren't aware of this scam). I'm not saying that all 'breeders' are 'brokers' for these mills, but just be very wary of this as it does happen. Together...we CAN put many puppy mills OUT OF BUSINESS (We already have). Let's END all the suffering. Also,
PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT PUPPY MILLS BY BUYING FROM PET STORES! PLEASE!! This is so sad and this in only ONE story out of many, many that we do not know about.

Corky's pups will not be ready for adoption for at least another 8 weeks while they grow and learn and bond, so stay tuned for updates and more photos in the days and weeks ahead. We have yet to name them, so any suggestions would be most welcome. They are now appropriately named 'The Seinfeld Gang'. |
