We had the pleasure of dogsitting one of our former foster boys, Sherman, of the Anishnabe Pups who had been saved by Scotland Haisley and Animal Rescue Corps. (ARC) dubbed 'Operation Anishnabe'  in late October, early November 2011, and brought into rescue.  There were 8 puppies in total  (less then 10 days old) when we first got them.  We bottle fed them until they were old enough to be weaned.  Can you believe we held this guy in the palm of our hands once?  lol   In the Facebook album 'Operation Anishnabe' you can see Sherman and some of his siblings being carried out.  In this HBO Documentary, One Nation under Dog, you can see the conditions of where they came from  *tissue alert*.  This makes me appreciate how far they have all come.    I'm so thrilled to report that all the pups are happy, healthy and thriving in their new homes and couldn't be more loved!! 

 I'm happy to report that all dogs that were caught by ARC were all vetted and medical needs taken care of and all were taken in by rescues and are safe.  Most have since been adopted.  

Here is Sherman playing with his new girl (friend) named Ruby recently at a local dog park.  I guess you can say it was a 'meeting of the minds' as Ruby is 2 years old and still very much a puppy herself.  Ruby is a puppy-mill survivor.   Ruby's (human) mom is also in rescue and we met up with another rescue volunteer (Anna) whom Sherman and I were meeting for the first time.  Anna had the pleasure of meeting Sherman's dad, Veteran, who was lovingly being fostered and nursed back to health by Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation before he was also adopted and is now living the great life too!.   I love full circle moments.  : )

Sherman and Sable - Sibling love like non-other *VIDEO*

I was so blessed to be asked to take care of Ms. Sable, our former foster girl

of the Anishnabe Pups, this past weekend.  All were rescued by ARC - Animal

Rescue Corps. last November 2011 in Quebec, dubbed 'Operation Anishnabe.'

To say culture shock is an understatement by far!  When I first took in all 8

Dane/Newf x pups, they were days old (7-10) to be more exact...and no mom.

 My husband and I, with the help of other wonderful LOYAL Rescue volunteers

 and friends, bottle fed each and every one of them for the first 4+ weeks until they

 could be weaned and started on solids.  It was truly a labour of love, multiplied!

I'd do it all over again if I had too, without hesitation.  These were 'my' babies and

I was mom this time (not just the mid-wife) as I had been previously with other litters.

A true Labour of Love...of epic proportion.  Lol  I love each and every one of them

and made sure I told them many times per day.  Well, my former foster babies

are now 9 months old and all are exceeding 100+ lbs each, except for Simon, who we

now suspect who's daddy is a 'Golden' .  They have the same mom, but could have

different daddys; however, we believe the other pups all have the same dad, given the

 circumstances they came from, and process of elimination.  I was one very happy

(former) foster mom to have Ms. Sable come to stay.  We couldn't very well have

a 'sleep over' with Ms. Sable without inviting brother Sherman, who lives only minutes

away, for a play date/reunion!  and so this is the result of that reunion and both pups

were overjoyed to see one another again.  Yes, they still do remember each other after

all this time.  As matter of fact, once Sable saw Sherman, I swear she was going to

jump through the car window! she was that excited.

The Mother of All Reunions

Well it's been a very long time coming, but we finally held our Big reunion with half of the Anishnabe Pups; Sable, Trip (was Sarge), Sherman and Simon.  The remaining pups and their families live quite a distance away, so unfortunately,  making the trip was not possible for them. : (    They were most definitely on our minds and with us in spirit that day.  Absent pups and their families: Ella (was Sapphire), Haisley (was Scotlund), Bella (was Sierra) and Delaney (was Satin).

I would like to give a huge Thank You to Trip and his mom and dad for generously hosting all of us for the day.  It is appreciated more then you know!!    What a great memory for all of us to have and we could not have picked a better day to hold the reunion on what I like to refer to has the '100 Acre Wood' lol

The pups picked up right where they left off and really enjoyed seeing one another again.  Sweet, sensitive Simon did not want his sister Sable to leave and was quite sad.  He really missed her.  For Sherman and Trip, it was like 'old' times as they picked right up where they left off and didn't stop playing or leave each others side much throughout the day.  They are definitely close buddies.  I still cannot believe I used to hold these little ones in the palm of my hands to bottle feed!  They are all approximately 80+ lbs, except for Simon, who is slightly smaller in size;  he is definitely the Lab x.

For the pups and their families, and especially for me,  it was definitely 'The Mother of all reunions!' lol

Then...

Well, after many months since their adoptions, siblings Sable and Simon were reunited for the very first time!  Although I couldn't be there in person with my gorgeous former foster babies and their families, I was definitely there with them in spirit...excitedly awaiting pictures and videos of this momentous occasion.  It was also the very first time both families met one another.  I can't imagine how emotional it was once both pups recognized each other for the first time.

We had originally thought we would name Simon 'Gordon'...Gordon Whitefoot. LOL  But decided on Simon 

A larger reunion is now planned for several of the Anishnabe pups and their families, so stay tuned.  Gonna need a LOT of tissue for this one!

Reunited and it feels ohhhhh soooo gooood!

Sherman and Sarge (now named Trip) reunited for the first time since their adoptions in January and boy did it ever feel good!  They didn't notice or pay attention to each other at first, but once they did, all I can say is it was pure love, love, love!  They were inseparable for most of the 2+ hours while we were at the park; running, growling, mouthing, bumping, jumping, kissing each other.  Of course, as former foster mom (mom) to 'the boys' I was hard pressed to hold back tears...so I didn't even try to! LOL   Trip didn't notice or recognize me at first either and was actually taken aback and a little stand offish when I first called his name, but once he remembered who I was, there was NO stopping him then!  He whined, cried and couldn't stop jumping all over me and his former foster dad (dad) filling our faces with those loving Trip kisses!!!  He was definitely overwhelmed with pure Dog Joy! I think all of us were overwhelmed with emotion. ; how could you not be.  And the best part; he still remembered and responded to my 'kissy' sound, the one I used all the time with the pups when it was time for them to come and get some love.  Trip especially loved it when I did that.  

We are currently working on a much bigger reunion with the rest of the Anishnabe siblings in the very near future so stay tuned.  Man, am I ever gonna need a lot of tissue for this momentous event!  My heart is full.

'Veteran'

Can you say like Father.....like son?  Wow, what a resemblance. 

This isTrip' was Sarge of the Anishnabe Pups at 17 weeks of age!  He looks alot like his BIG daddy 'Veteran' who is being lovingly cared for by Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilition.   Daddy Veteran is now up for adoption and searching for his most perfect forever home.  Please check him out.  I'm so excited as we will be seeing Trip very soon and look forward to that meeting.  Wonder if he'll remember us?  I was foster mama (surrogate mom) to all the pups for the first several months of their lives, so I hope he remembers me.  I will be sure to post pictures and videos of that meeting.  Can't wait!  It means so  much to know that all of them are so healthy and happy and growing up fast.  I cannot believe the size of Trip.  Wow!

Anishnabe Pups Updates!

As promised, here are new updated photos of the pups in their new homes.  

Satin's (now named Delaney) was taken the day before her adoption.  One common theme from updates from their new families is that they are all very smart!! They range between 40-60 lbs in weight each at 15-16 weeks of age approx.  Sierra's (now named Bella) trainer feels that she could weigh between 150-200 lbs full grown!!!!  Scotlund (now named Haisley) even knows to ring a bell to alert that he has to 'go' outside.  They are such smart puppies!!  

Trip enjoys country life and hikes with his new family.  

Delaney is enjoying her new life and lives with 3 children.  A really good fit for this play-girl! : )

Bella enjoys the company of her much BIGGER brother Cooper, an Anatolian Sheppard Dog; oh yeah, and being loved and fussed over and playing with ALL her new toys!!!  Lucky girl! : )

Simon should be called 'Saint Simon' as he now lives in a Church that is converted to a home. How appropriate for this little Angel 

Sable will be a bit of a celebrity of sorts...
Sweet Dog Photography will be following her over the course of her first year and featuring her on their website.  The camera seems to really love her too!
I look so forward to following her as she grows 

To continue to honour the man who saved them, Scotlund's new family have decided to rename him 'Haisley.'  Very befitting and I LOVE the name!! 

I've been so fortunate to visit Sherman a couple of times and he's been to visit us.  He remembers us and went immediately to 'their' (his and his litter mates) room and sat outside their bedroom door until I opened it.  I know he was looking for his brothers and sisters.  It was a bit sad to see him disappointed when they weren't there, but after he realized that, he was just as happy to play with our other foster dogs, who were more then happy to oblige.  

Sherman now has an extensive vocabulary and is set to start puppy training classes soon.  I'm so fortunate to have been asked by his new mom to participate in Sherman's training classes with her.  I'm so excited and honored!  I can't wait and of course I'll blog about it.

Happy One Month BIRTH-day Sweet Angels!

I can't believe these sweet babies are already one month old!  All are very healthy and doing wonderful and meeting all milestones.  They have now transitioned to solids and are both paper/pee pad trained.  Their teeth are coming through, so they are now starting to teethe which means lots of durable chew toys are in order! Their individual personalities are starting to emerge as they enjoy playing with each other and their toys.  They are growing and changing so fast that I try to capture as much of them as possible before they change yet again.  We are so blessed to be able to help care for these special pups, even if it's only for a short while.  We enjoy every single minute we have with all of them

The Cast of Little Characters

 My beautiful foster babies! 

4 weeks old

I'm working on getting pictures of the remaining pups posted, so stay tuned.  Here's what I can say about them so far.

SATIN
Satin 'white glove' named for her one white front paw is the smallest of the Anishnabe pups but don't let size fool you, she's also a very confident little girl with the sweetest personality and really nice temperament to boot.  When we first introduced all the pups to our other 'pack', Satin was one of the first to try to engage them in play and was running around as if she had known them all along!  Satin is also one who will tug at my pants and be pulling on them to get my attention and/or pick her up~   She doesn't appear to be fearful very easily, which is good to see.

SARGE

Sarge 'Blue Eyes' is a pup after my own heart; should have named him 'Sinatra!'  Sarge is quite the  flirt, (much like Sinatra too)..confident and  playful, Sarge is very engaging.  He's the first one to come running to be with his 'BIG MAMA' pack leader!! LOL  and enjoys spending time cuddling in my lap giving me sweet Sarge kisses!  If I'm not giving him ALL the attention, he's usually the one tugging at my pant legs or pawing at me to remind me that I must pay attention to him too. He really loves his stuffy's and is both paper and pee pad trained now.  Next, we'll work on fully house training all the pups.  

Sweet Sierra 'slippers' happily named for her 4 white paws. She is  the fluffiest (and softest) of the 'black' dogs and the one that  I think will look most like her mother, a Newfoundlander. Sierra is a gentle and quiet pup who loves to snuggle into you and loves to be told how much she's loved and adored.  This girl is love, love, love!

SHERMAN

Sherman 'tank' is the biggest pup in the pack at 8.4 lbs at 4 weeks of age.  He will play and engage the  other pups, but  is more laid back and calm compared to his siblings.  Sherman likes nothing  more then to just be with you.  Sherman is always wanting me to pick him up and never wants me to leave his side.  He's a lover-boy for sure!  Can you say GIANT lap dog couch potato?  LOL 

SIMON

Simon, Simon, Simon! (aka Clifford) Well, what can I say about Simon. Simon is the instigator, the one who just loves to bug the  other while they are trying to sleep.  If he were human,  he'd be the 'party boy' or 'Dennis the menace'  in the bunch! LOL  He's the lively one who likes to get the others going.  Simon loves to play and will still be playing long after the others have gone to sleep.  He's  a very sweet boy who adores attention from humans and will seek it out from you.  Simon is also a sensitive boy.  Simon is turning out to be quite fluffy and soft,, so he may just end up looking like a 'blonde' Newfoundlander!?  

SAPPHIRE
Sapphire is a confident little girl who makes her presence known in more ways then one.  She wants to play with the others and can be rather  insistent if they don't want to play with her.  I'd call her a little 'Firecracker' for lack of a better word; always on the go.  She won't take no for an answer. Sapphire  loves the company of humans and loves to snuggle.  She's teething quite a bit now, so chews everything and anything, so have plenty of durable chew toys ready and waiting for Sapphire. 

SCOTLUND
Named after the man who rescued all of them, Scotlund Haisley of Animal Rescue Corps. (ARC), Scotlund is a very sweet and gentle pup who, like his siblings, loves to snuggle and be with you.  Scotlund will just sit and stare at me with love and adoration in his eyes as if to say 'thank you' for taking care of us. He wants to be held and picked up, but is much too much of a gentleman to be rude and push his siblings out of the way.  Scotlund is a perfect gentleman!  He's a pretty quiet and laid back kinda guy who I think will just enjoy hanging with his human pack, as well as a fur pack.
