A Special LOYAL Rescue Inc. Announcement!!!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to our LOYAL Rescue Inc. volunteer Julie and her fiance Dale!!!  They were married in late October and to help celebrate this wonderful event they requested their guests donate to LOYAL Rescue Inc instead of giving them gifts.  Here's wishing them much happiness and a lifetime of love and joy!!!!  Thank you to both of them for thinking of LOYAL Rescue Inc. during this happy time!!! 

Christmas is coming!!!!   

And it can be a dangerous time for your pet.  I thought I would include some safety reminders for you before the season really starts. 

Food: Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without all of the delicious treats that come with it. Unfortunately, most of our favourite holiday snacks are also some of the most dangerous to our pets. Turkey, for one, can be dangerous to your pet if you are not careful to dispose of bones safely. Bones can easily puncture your pet’s lungs or digestive tract, or cause your animal to choke, either of which can potentially be fatal. Chocolate is another potential hazard, and can actually kill your dog or cat depending on their size, the type of chocolate and the quantity consumed. It can also lead to extreme hyperactivity or even seizures in your animal. This doesn’t mean that you have to completely eliminate chocolate from your holiday, but it does mean that you should be careful about the ways that you include chocolate in your celebrations. For example, it’s important to avoid keeping chocolates in easily accessible areas for pets, such as hanging in stockings or on your tree. If you feel like you have to give pets a special treat on Christmas day, try making their regular diet more exciting, say by giving them the canned version instead of dry.

Plants: Many of the beautiful and fragrant plants we fill our homes with at Christmas also put our pets at risk. Popular plants like poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are extremely toxic if ingested, and can cause anything from gastrointestinal upset to cardiac problems to comas to death. For these reasons, these plants might be one of those things worth avoiding this Christmas. If you simply must have them, make sure you keep them far out of reach. Luckily, your Christmas tree isn’t toxic, and shouldn’t pose any serious threat to your pet, so long as you avoid using chemicals in the water.

Decorations: There are a wide range of decorations people use to brighten up their homes for the holidays, and a wide range of hazards that accompany them. From the toxic artificial snow in the windows to sharp staples and tacks that that deck the halls, decorations should be used with caution. All electrical wires should be taped down or placed behind heavy furniture. Also, gift wrapping supplies should be carefully stored. All of these items can be tempting for pets and are often mistaken for toys.

Guests: While you may have guests over throughout the year, Christmas generally means a lot more guests than usual, and a general air of excitement that can leave people a little more carefree (and careless) than usual. With so many people going in and out, the chance of your pet getting out of the house is greatly increased during the holidays. As always, it is important to make sure your animal has proper identification tags on at all times. Even better, find a place in your home that you can set aside for your pet for when the house gets busy; not only will this allow you to enclose them during times when the front door is opening and closing, but it will also give your pets a place of refuge for when they feel overwhelmed. Like anyone, your pets can become stressed by the crowds and noise at big family gatherings, and most will appreciate the chance to be alone for a while.

And finally - don't forget to get your shopping finished early.   That way, you and your pet can relax before the big eventful day arrives.

November 12, 2011 - HHP ROCK FOR RESCUE - Thamesford, Ontario

It is going to be an Elvis tribute night with lots of fun and excitment. You can come relive the 50's and 60's and dress in your favourite poodle skirt and leather jacket.  Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. LOYAL Rescue Inc. is an approved Petsmart Rescue group and I will be bringing my foster pug, Chester Ray.  Come and visit us and say hi!!!  Meet Chester to see if he would be a great addition to your home. 

 

November 19 and 20, 2011 - Winter Woofstock - Direct Energy Centre - CNE Grounds - 10AM to 6PM each day
If you enjoy the Summer Woofstock, then you will love the Winter Woofstock.  Yes you can bring your dog, just like in the summer.  There are fashion shows, Rescue Me winter games, vendors and of course, LOYAL Rescue will be there.  Check out the Winter Woofstock Website

November 22, 2011 - HHP Auction

All of the HHP 45 members enter various items for your bidding pleasure.  LOYAL Rescue Inc. has some items in this auction as well.  Should be a big event giving you the chance to shop for usual Christmas gifts.  In the last auction, we had orders go to Alberta, Quebec, Ontario and even TEXAS!!!  Go to the HHP Auction website to start your bidding on November 22, 2011.  You can now view the various items that are available with new items added each day.

Volunteer Job Postings 

Phone Screeners – we need some phone screeners as we are getting short again.  This is how I started in the rescue and it’s a very rewarding way to spend 1 hour of your time to speak to a potential adopter.  We provide the questions that you need to ask and after the phone interview is completed you send in your report.  Takes approximately 1 hour out of your personal time.
Home Visitors – Also another needed position to fill.  You will choose what areas you are available to visit for us.  Again you are given a questionnaire to fill out for us and send in after you have visited the home.  As always, safety is first for Loyal Rescue Inc. and if you arrive at the designated home and do not feel comfortable, you are definitely not required to enter the home.
Foster Homes - we need them in order to be able to rescue more dogs.  We are getting a manual in place and if approved you will have a mentor that will help you every step of the way.  We have foster homes in London, Mississauga, Ottawa, Peterborough, Kitchener, Hamilton and even in Baltimore and Rochester, New York, so you don't necessarily need to be in Toronto.

If you would like to make a donation, please use our umbrella rescue group "Helping Homeless Pets" and use their secure website to receive a tax receipt.   Choose "DONATE NOW", and then select LOYAL Rescue from the Fund/Designation drop-down menu (this step is incredibly important as any funds sent to HHP without choosing LOYAL from the list will not be forwarded to us).  Complete the remainder of the page and a tax receipt will be issued at the end of your transaction.  Monies will be directed to cover veterinary costs for LOYAL Rescue Inc.  Of course you can send us a donation through the mail as well at LOYAL Rescue Inc., 171A Rink Street, Suite 199, Peterborough, ON, K9J 2J6.
